Job Description
The Data Support Specialist provides a first level of technical and troubleshooting support for the Data Service Center. This includes but not limited to: monitoring the legacy and next generation core, and edge network, providing initial triage on troubles and escalated problems to the appropriate teams within the DSC organization or departments outside the DSC.
Performs job duties consistent within safety, legal, and regulatory requirements; company standards, culture and business practices. Acts with the highest level of business and personal ethical standards in all aspects of job performance.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Performs job duties consistent with safety, legal, regulatory, company and business practices and requirements.
- Monitors, interprets and investigates data network alarms, including logging into network elements and executing CLI commands to determine root cause of alarms.
- Manages and coordinates handling of escalated trouble calls.
- Performs initial triage and troubleshooting of escalated Carrier Ethernet, Wireless/Cellular Backhaul, DIA, ATM and DSL troubles, as well as ELINE, ELAN. Y.1731, MPLS, BGP, ISIS issues.
- Utilizes IP troubleshooting tools such as Ping, Traceroute, Telnet to diagnose, and isolate network troubles.
- Performs basic router and switch troubleshooting in a multivendor environment.
- Makes router/switch configuration changes using IOS and JUNOS CLI to large-capacity Cisco and Juniper routers and switches. These include: Cisco CRS-1, ASR9000, 7600, 3600 6500-series, and Juniper M40 and ERX series routers/switches.
- Validates reported troubles and escalates to appropriate DSC personnel or other departments within Fairpoint.
- Track and update troubles in ticketing system.
- Provide comprehensive updates to tickets, including complex technical descriptions of actions taken to correct problems.
- Meet Mean Time to Repair and Network Availability goals and objectives.
- Maintain awareness of network maintenance activities affecting elements.
- Recommend solutions to correct network trouble issues and faults.
- Develops job aids and documentation to support on-going network troubleshooting efforts, and departmental policy and procedural changes.
- Provide email/text alerts in the case of major outages or customer escalations, pursuant to department policies.
- Opens and manages technical conference bridges, provides guidance to conferees, and ensures Change Management policies are adhered to.
- Advise on network upgrades and other configuration changes to network elements to maintain service levels.
- Support change activities to implement service restoration.
- Apply comprehensive technical knowledge, and functional knowledge of NGN and Legacy networks to the troubleshooting of network problems.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the departmental Manager or Director.
- Work with Data Network Engineering and or Vendors to support root cause analysis.
Additional Duties:
The Data Support Specialist reports to the Monitoring Manager of the Data Service Center. The incumbent will work closely with other network functional areas such as DSC Tier II/III and Data Network Engineering, Data Network Architecture, Provisioning, Capacity Planning, NOC, IT Systems Administration including Netcool and Remedy / InfoVista.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
The incumbent must have the ability to listen and interpret the needs of customers both internal and external.
Requires a fundamental knowledge of the telecommunications industry and IT/ISP networking and IP Telephony. Network certifications such as Cisco CCENT, CCNA are preferred. Ability to quickly identify appropriate internal and/or external support services to resolve network issues. Proven ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks in a high pressure environment with minimal supervision. Strong understanding of troubleshooting, root cause analysis, network and alarm surveillance systems. Must have and display excellent verbal and written communication skills. Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, Visio, MetaSolv, Remedy and NetCool.
Requires an understanding of IP tunneling in CTBH circuit design and traces tunnel routes through the network.
Requires an understanding of VLANs and can apply knowledge to isolate and triage related connectivity issues.
Knowledge of Cisco ANA, Oracle Metasolv M6.
Required Education & Experience:
This position requires an Associate's degree or equivalent telecommunications experience. A minimum of 3+ year's in a telecommunication industry or customer service provider is required.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
This position is full time, and may involve work on multiple shifts with potential overtime commitment.
This position works in an office setting with a low noise level. The performance of duties for this position requires continuous sitting and repetitive hand/arm use with fine manipulation. The incumbent may occasionally be required to stand, walk, climb stairs, and reach at or below shoulder height.
Specific vision requirements include use of computer screens, close vision and ability to differentiate color. Distance and/or peripheral vision ability may be required occasionally.
